FAQ's

You've got questions.  We've got answers.

Will anyone find out I'm in therapy?

Not unless you want them to. Everything you share in therapy and the fact that you are in therapy is totally confidential. Even if your therapist sees you out and about, she won't acknowledge you (unless you acknowledge her first). There is a federal law that protects your privacy.

What will you share with my parents?

There are only a few things we have to share with your parents. Your therapist will let you know what those things during your first session. Parents, your involvement in therapy is very important. Our therapists encourage frequent communication.

How long are sessions?

Between 45 and 60 minutes

How long will I be in therapy

That depends. Some people are in therapy for years. Some people come for a few sessions to get through a specific life event. No matter what, we'll talk about discharge frequently throughout your treatment.

How do I know if I (or my child) need therapy?

Most people could benefit from therapy, even if they don't necessarily "need" it. In general, if emotions and behaviors are getting in the way of your life or your relationships, you should probably give therapy a try. If you aren't sure, give us a call to chat about it.

I think my child needs therapy but he/she doesn't want to.  Should we still try it?

Our therapists are patient and skilled at building relationships. Kids who are hesitant about therapy often come around once they realize the benefits of having a neutral, non-judgmental adult willing to listen. With that being said, we don't force kids to continue therapy if they are absolutely opposed.

How often are sessions?

Usually between 2-4 times per month.

What type of therapy do you do?

Jes and Chelsey typically use a mix of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We will work with you to determine a treatment plan that will help you meet your goals.

What will sessions be like?

Usually we'll start by checking in on your progress toward your goals, maybe grab a snack or a hot cocoa. The rest of the session depends. Sometimes, we'll do more listening and you'll do more talking. Sometimes, we might teach you a coping skill so we'll do more of the talking. Sometimes the session will be more hands-on. We might color, draw or do a craft.
